Get money in for time out

A GAP year is now an established rite of passage for many young adults. Indeed, so many students are taking time out between school and university, or university and work, to travel the world that an entire industry has grown up to cater for their needs.

Increasingly, though, when faced with the prospect of working until their seventies, professionals in their thirties, forties and even fifties are opting to take time out to explore the globe. Back then, Rodrigues was 10 years old and Kalihi was a quiet, sparsely populated outpost of Honolulu, where immigrants found affordable homes and friendly neighbors.

Over the past 65 years, rapid, largely unplanned development brought parks and schools, thriving businesses and industrial districts, and a diverse mix of families into Kalihi.
