| The Private Equity Bubble - When smart money does dumb things
Mike Larson writes : During the housing bubble, a lot of lenders lost their minds. It was as if some mass psychosis took over even the experienced executives, convincing them to do exceedingly dumb things. They didn't bother checking borrowers' incomes or assets … They didn't care if the loan covered the entire value of the house … And they weren't the least bit concerned that all kinds of exotic mortgages were being doled out to people with horrible credit histories. .
Venture Capital Drawn to Freewebs
Haroon Mokhtarzada has always been an entrepreneur. Growing up Silver Spring, he set up lemonade stands, hosted magic shows and started a neighborhood lawn-mowing business. During the rise of the Internet, he was fascinated by the proliferation of Web sites and social networks. Someday, he predicted, everyone would have his own Web site to stake a personal claim on the ever-expanding net. .
Trying to make sense of the irrational
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is being harangued by right-wingers for going to Syria and meeting with that countrys president without White House approval. By doing so, they complain, shes undermining President Bushs foreign policy. On CNN, conservative commentator Glenn Beck blasted the California Democrat for engaging in unauthorized negotiation with our enemies in Syria. And during a campaign stop in Iowa, Republican presidential wannabe Mitt Romney bashed Pelosi for having her picture taken with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and for being seen in a headscarf during her visit to the Muslim nation. I just dont know what got into her head, to be completely honest with you, the former Massachusetts governor said. I think it was a huge, huge mistake.
Make room for a foreign student
Our daughter never quite has forgiven us for not giving her a sibling. For us, the idea of one baby who someday would become a teenager was plenty to handle. Why on earth would we want two teenagers rolling their eyes at us? Occasionally, Natalie has suggested another alternative to my giving birth again (uh, no!) would be to host a foreign exchange student.Honestly, I couldn't be on my best behavior for two days, much less an entire school year. I would feel as if I never could lose my temper, eat Hot Tamales candy as a pre-dinner snack or lounge around in my faded blue bathrobe in front of a foreign exchange student for fear of giving off a tragic, Ugly American vibe.Fortunately for exchange students, there are other people who don't mind opening their home to a stranger. Levin: Senate Will Not Cut Iraq Money
(AP) WASHINGTON The Senate will not stop paying for the Iraq war or relent from insisting that President Bush keep pressing the Baghdad government for a negotiated end to the violence, a top Democrat said Sunday.Michigan Sen. Carl Levin, the Senate Armed Service Committee chairman, took issue with an effort by Majority Leader Harry Reid to cut off money for the war next year as a way to end U.S. involvement."We're not going to vote to cut funding, period," Levin said. "But what we should do, and we're going to do, is continue to press this president to put some pressure on the Iraqi leaders to reach a political settlement."Bush has asked Congress for more than $100 billion to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan this year. The House and Senate have approved the money, but their bills seek to wind down the war by including timelines for troops to come home something Bush will not accept. The Senate bill would require a U.S.
Neighbors exasperated by prolonged oil cleanup
A partial cleanup was done of the Shea backyard in May 2005 by digging out contaminated soil and replacing it, but retesting showed that the contamination has returned, Danielle Shea said. "We've been totally cooperative," said Donna Brenner. "In August 2006, they said they'd dig us out." Insurer vows to finish job The cleanup is being handled by the High Point Insurance Co. of Middletown, which said in a statement that it has spent $385,000 to date cleaning up its client's property and neighboring ones. "High Point has actively been working in cooperation with environmental consultants and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to resolve the situation on behalf of its insured," said Clemence Scouten, a company spokeswoman.
