| The Future of Health Care in the United States
THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT is involved in health care in various ways that include (1) providing services to veterans, (2) paying for care received by Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, (3) assuring quality through regulatory activity, (4) financing the discovery of medical breakthroughs, and (5) training members of the health workforce and assuring that the nation has an adequate supply of them. None of these functions would appear to be in any immediate danger of disappearing. Moreover, with the aging of the population, it is reasonable to assume that the role of the government in these endeavors will increase over time. The aim of this essay is to consider some ways in which the health care of tomorrow will be affected by the intermingling of several different kinds of factors such as demography, epidemiology, economics, technology, globalization, and individual health behavior.
Host not found
Instead we get "host not found" or no error message at all, just a timed-out connection or a crash we might attribute to some other cause. This is invisible censorship, hard to detect, hard to prove. In Uzbekistan, the government uses a technique called DNS hijacking to divert users from banned sites to so-called "modified mirrors", fake versions similar to the originals in most respects, but containing misinformation or black propaganda. Without some technical knowledge, the substitution is hard to spot. Dissidents such as Shi Tao now face a matrix of government, technology and corporate power which represents a fundamental change in the way censorship is practised and experienced around the world. Beyond vague notions of "corporate social responsibility" it is clear that global information companies do not feel they have any obligation to be open or transparent, let alone to maintain any kind of public space for debate or dissent.

No Blues, No Boos
An official is supposed to hear nothing but silence when he makes a bad call -- no noise calling for an instant replay. Just send a letter, like to Congress. The executive director of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, Michael Colbrese, says he can't understand why people "think it's acceptable to boo in the first place." It might be the opposite. We might not be booing enough in the United States. In politics, for instance, try nowadays to organize a group booing of George W. Bush and you end up several blocks removed and booing inside a chain-link cage. The British yah-boo system is better. Hackneyed politicians in the House of Commons can't get through more than a few lines of their speeches before being hit with a barrage of taunts and jeers.
BabyUniverse: B. Riley Conference Presentation Transcript
Okay, I think we will go ahead and get started on the next presentation. I'm happy to have here BabyUniverse, which has actually made a significant announcement this morning, which I am sure John will go into in a bit. I am happy to introduce John Textor. John Textor Great, thank you Justin. Thank you everyone for being here. We did have a significant announcement this morning. As some of you know, we announced back in September of last year that we wanted to pursue a modified approach to our acquisition strategy. We wanted to expand the definition of a dramatically considered transformative transaction. We had a number of issues that we thought were important from a business perspective that required scale. Scale for consumer marketing purposes, scale for business model implementation purposes and scale for capital markets benefits as well.
Syneron: Well-Equipped for Success
Paul Simenauer submits: Syneron (ELOS) sells medical products, which make use of their proprietary ELOS technology, to the cosmetic surgery industry. Demographics for this industry are favorable, allowing for strong potential growth opportunities. As the baby boomer generation ages, demand for Syneron's products will likely increase as boomers seek to look younger. Moreover, Syneron is a highly profitable business that generates strong free cash flow. In fiscal 2005, the company generated nearly $30 million in owner's earnings and had net margins of 27%. The main value driver behind Syneron is their low cost structure and extremely low tax rate on operating income of 2%, compared to the corporate tax rates of competitors of approximately 35%. I calculated a $42 stock price from my DCF model, and gave myself a 20% margin of safety to arrive at a conservative estimate of value at $34.00 per share, using a discount rate of 17%.
