| Listen Up, Enterprises: Open Source VoIP's Voice Is Stronger
Digium's Asterisk is far and away the most mature and popular open source IP PBX currently available. Other open source projects are under development -- many, such as OpenPBX, forking the Asterisk code base; others, such as FreeSwitch, being built from the ground up. However, despite increasing competition among open source IP PBXs, Asterisk remains the most compelling enterprise VoIP play. So much so that Sam Houston State University last year migrated 6,000-plus extensions from Cisco CallManager to Asterisk, eliminating phone licensing costs and increasing customization control and security in the process. Summer Bay Resorts, a time-share vacation property company, logs more than a million voice minutes per month on its 13-server Asterisk system.
Chapter gambling on jobs Church Rock president sees casino as a ...
GALLUP To Johnny Livingston, the tribal casino Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. wants to build in Church Rock means one thing: jobs. These days there's not much work to be had in Church Rock, a sleepy pocket of the Navajo Nation just east of Gallup tucked in between the sandstone mesas of Red Rock Park and Interstate 40. But for a small public school, a lonely gas station, a few manufacturing operations and a handful of government offices, most of the community's roughly 2,800 residents have no choice but to find work elsewhere. "A lot of our people travel out of town for work, to places like Window Rock and Crownpoint," said Livingston, the community's chapter president. Those are the ones who have jobs to go to. Livingston said he had no exact figures for Church Rock, "but it's probably over 50 percent unemployment; I'd say maybe even 60." The average unemployment rate across the reservation tends to hover between 40 and 50 percent.
Ayden officials bend commissioners' ears
From an upcoming request to expand the town of Ayden's extraterritorial jurisdiction to concerns about the Southwest Bypass, Ayden town officials spent Monday evening updating Pitt County officials on town projects. "It is important you know what direction we're going and we know what direction you're going so we can work together and not duplicate," Ayden Mayor Stephen Tripp told county commissioners at the start of the meeting. "We both represent the same citizens." .
Martin Kettle v Jackie Ashley
The big truth in British politics right now is that Labour is extremely unpopular with the public. With the exception of the recent Communicate Research/Independent poll, all the polls are showing a large and widening Tory lead. That was true before the Budget in the ICM/Guardian poll and it is also true since the Budget in the YouGov/Telegraph and Populus/Times polls. Wednesday's polling from Scotland in the Times shows that it's just as true north of the border as south of it. The figures increasingly point to a Tory majority government, not a hung parliament. My argument is that Labour is not taking this situation sufficiently seriously. There seems to be a widespread considered view among MPs that things will all be better when Blair goes and that Brown is the man to make them better.
The DVD Dissection: Fast Food Nation
I have never eaten a fast food burger. Growing up, I was an extremely picky eater, so I stuck with chicken nuggets only. It was a habit that has remained with me into adulthood. What makes that more interesting is the fact that I worked at a fast food restaurant for a short time. I wont specify which one. It might sound hard to believe but its true. What Fast Food Nation does is cement that my decision to not consume those burgers was a wise one. Having been employed at such a place many years ago, I can safely say that this film gets a lot of its images, themes, and realities correct. Fast Food Nation is an ensemble piece that follows three storylines which delve into the deep dark secrets, risks, and effects of the fast food industry. Don Henderson (Greg Kinnear) is a marketing executive at Mickeys, a fast food establishment, and he is responsible for The Big One, a hamburger that has become an enormous hit.
