| A daughter’s dream
Pat Taylor, Gibson's mother, said her daughter decided to make the film after discovering a lack of resources specific to patients her age. Taylor, who was in Surrey last Wednesday for a public screening of Chasing Rainbows, said her daughter dreamed of distributing the film to doctors, patients and their families once it was completed. Gibson didn't live long enough to see that happen. Taylor picked up where she left off and finished Chasing Rainbows last year. The result is a frank, yet upbeat, look at the issues and emotions young adult cancer patients grapple with such as anger, fear of dying, managing a career and finances during treatment, and sex and relationships. And though the footage is almost a decade old now, the issue is more timely than ever. Vikram Bubber can speak to that.
EW review: A brilliant 'Hoax'
(Entertainment Weekly) -- The two-bit distortions in "A Million Little Pieces" that landed squirming memoirist James Frey on Oprah Winfrey's couch of shame last year were chump change compared with the million-dollar lies served up by Clifford Irving some 35 years ago. Back in 1971, Irving, an unexceptional novelist known best, if at all, for his biography of an art forger, dazzled the fancy New York publishing world with the memoirs he wrung from top secret interviews with legendarily reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes. Only the author never met Hughes. Not once. He made the whole book up, served a prison sentence of 14 months, then went on to write his own memoir about making up the memoir. Silver-foxy Richard Gere is not the first suave Buddhist I'd think of to play dark, curly, Jewish New Yorker Irving, but the quick-witted Gere who schemes and fast-talks his way around the snappy, plugged-in scam saga "The Hoax" is like no Gere I've seen before.
Urbanchek Talks All Things Michael Phelps
The White House. Thoroughbred Horses. Michael Jordan. All of these things come to the mind of coaching legend John Urbanchek when he refers to Michael Phelps. After another dominating performance at the 2007 FINA World Championships, Urbanchek spoke in detail about the bond he shares with Phelps, and his thoughts on America's greatest Olympic athlete. Urbanchek first met Phelps after a 1996 trip to the White House. He stopped off in Maryland he said and visited North Baltimore Aquatic Club. On some good advice from Murray Stevens, he checked out a boy barely over 10 who already looked to have the polish and finesse of a veteran. On his performance thus far at the World Championships, Urbanchek said smoothly, “Michael is on fire." Did he see this great bunch of performances coming? “Yes.
Extra sales tax sought to fight crime
Thurston County residents will pay about a third of a penny more in sales tax for every $1 they spend to interrupt the cycle of abuse and violence that leads to crime and more jail inmates if they approve a proposal now being reviewed by government leaders countywide. .
Superintendent talks about school district
Since February, Dwayne Robinson has been the superintendent of Oroville High School District, filling in while Oran Roberts is on active duty in Iraq. "I will probably be in this position through next year," Robinson said. Roberts is in Mississippi training, getting shots and preparing to be shipped to Iraq. Meanwhile, Robinson is managing the school district. "I am enjoying being in the position," Roberts said. "Going from assistant superintendent to superintendent, there's been no surprises. I take one day at a time and hope at the end of next year when Oran returns, the district will be as good or better than when he left." One of the challenges Robinson has found is maintaining quality education and programs while addressing dropping enrollment and decreasing funding.
Homer City OKs 5-year contract with police
HOMER CITY--After several months of negotiations, Homer City Council Tuesday approved a new five-year contract with the United Mine Workers of America, covering wages and benefits for borough police officers. Although there are portions of the labor agreement that Homer City Mayor Michael Gaydosh doesn't agree with, he is relieved to have wrapped up talks, which began in December. "It can be a trying situation at times, but I think the general population would rather have a police force as opposed to not having one," Gaydosh said. "Now, we can move on and the people of Homer City Borough can count on five more years of police protection." The contract, which is retroactive to Jan. 1, calls for annual hourly wage increases of 60 cents for full-time officers and 40 cents for part-timers.

Unfortunately, the article ("Hybrids save gas, but do they save your wallet? Do the math before buying a hybrid vehicle," April 1) gives the wrong answer to the wrong question. How silly would the following headline be: "Seat belts save your family, but do they save your wallet?" When the consequences are severe, almost everyone would tolerate a minor cost to avoid the problem. The same reasoning could apply to the Prius hybrid, which the article singles out. But even using Doron Levin's gas-cost payback analysis, the Prius costs less than all but a handful of domestic or foreign cars. .
Business Browser: XXX Adult Site rejected (4 pm)
Adult content won't get its own .xxx address on the Web because it would force the organization that manages Internet addresses to regulate content. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers also rejected the .xxx designation by a 9-5 vote in response to government concerns over offensive content, the organization said today in statement at its Web site. The action marks the second time in less than a year that Icann has rejected a proposal from ICM Registry, a Jupiter, Florida-based company, to approve the .xxx domain for adult content on the Web. ICM Registry first made the request six years ago. Icann said the .xxx domain would make it responsible for “content and conduct." The decision was “the result of very careful scrutiny and consideration of all arguments," Vint Cerf, chairman of Marina del Rey, California-based Icann said in the statement.
